There’s a surprisingly large number of things to do at Jesmond Park. Whether you feel like visiting a playground, having a picnic, going on a bushwalk or playing a game of frisbee golf, you can do it all at Jesmond Park. With all the activities available in this park, it’s very popular on weekends and there’s often birthday parties and other celebrations happening.
There’s actually two playgrounds at this park.
The first playground is near the very busy Newcastle Road and is best suited to 3 and over. Younger kids will enjoy it but you may need to help them on and off the play equipment.
There’s a climbing structure, roundabout, double seesaw (fits 4) and a flying saucer swing (fits as many as you can get in). The toilets, bubbler and BBQs are next to this playground.
There is a lot of noise from the main road but if you’ve got noisy kids, you won’t notice after a while.
The beautiful Jesmond Rose Garden is in the front part as well so take the time to smell the roses. Warning – there are stormwater drains close to the playground so keep an eye on your kids.
At the back of Jesmond Park is another playground. There’s a wide range of cool playground equipment suitable for kids from toddlers to older kids.
For little ones, there’s a small train that they can toddle around and climb.
The playground features a circle of swings (3 regular & 2 baby). This set up enables kids to face each other while they swing.
There’s also play equipment with ladder and slide, climbing wall and a fun climbing frame that spins around.
There’s also a balance course and my favourite, the wobbly logs.
Oh and there’s no toilets at the back. Toilets are 100 metres away near the front playground.
Also around this playground is a track suitable for bikes and scooters. There’s also a half-basketball court as well as covered picnic shelters and BBQs.
Jesmond Park is a fantastic spot for a picnic as there are picnic tables and benches all over the park. I lost count of how many there were. If you feel like a bushwalk, stroll along signposted walking tracks. You can even walk up to John Hunter Hospital. It’s a lovely walk except it is uphill.
For more family fun, bring a frisbee and play 9 holes of disc golf in Jesmond Park.
The course is well set up with the tee areas marked with pavers in the ground while the target is a chain metal basket that fits a frisbee.
Although not a problem at the moment with the dry conditions, there are usually mozzies at Jesmond Park so bring Aerogard just in case.
