Swim and Spot Coal Ships at Nobbys Beach

Nobbys Beach is a popular beach for swimmers, surfers and sunbakers in Newcastle, New South Wales. This eastern facing beach is formed by the breakwall with Nobbys Headland at the point.

It’s always an experience swimming at Nobbys while massive coal ships glide in and out of Newcastle Harbour. Nobbys Beach is a favourite beach in Newcastle just for the scenery.

With views of Nobbys and distant views to Port Stephens, it’s a wonderful beach for families to visit. It’s a wide beach, so there’s plenty of room to build sandcastles, play footy and just relax on the sand. If you’re feeling a bit more energetic, there’s volleyball nets set up so bring a ball.

There’s a rock pool at the southern end of the beach. High tide tends to cover most of the rocks and low tide makes it a popular spot for snorkellers and those with young kids.

In summer, the rocks provide protection from the northeast wind. Nor’easters tend to bring the bluebottles. But you’ll see posted signs on the beach or hear announcements if this is the case.

After visiting the beach, go for a stroll along Newcastle’s Macquarie Pier at Nobbys Beach and learn more about the city’s maritime history with interpretative signs dotted along the walk.

Nobbys Headland is also open to the public on weekends so walk up to the lighthouse and enjoy the views of Newcastle, Nobbys Beach, Stockton Bridge and Newcastle Harbour
