With summer now well and truly here, what better way to cool off than to head to Merewether Ocean Baths. It’s one of the most popular family-friendly swimming spots in Newcastle.
Newcastle is known for its amazing beaches and Merewether Beach consistently ranks as one of the best in Australia. With the Merewether Ocean Baths located on the edge of Merewether Beach, it’s a must-visit for locals and tourists alike.
The Merewether Ocean baths underwent a $4 million upgrade in 2014 which has made huge improvements to this already wonderful facility.
It features two large ocean baths; one deep with diving blocks (one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere) and one shallow with a sandy beach- perfect for the little ones to splash and dig in safely.
The Merewether Ocean baths cater for everyone, whether you are a competitive swimmer or are there simply for leisure.
This is a great spot for families with children of all ages. It has everything that you need to keep the kids entertained whilst enjoying a little time out for yourself too. Pack the car, pack the kids and enjoy some fun in the sun at this stunning location.
As with most beaches, there is not a lot of shade so be sure to pack plenty of sunscreen, sun-safe clothing, and a beach umbrella or shade tent to avoid getting burnt. Don’t forget your buckets and spades, a beach ball or boogie board to make your visit even more fun!
There are a variety of seating options including bench seats and steps surrounding both pools, and a few sheltered tables if you don’t wish to sit on the sand. There are also heaps of great eating options within a short walking distance, all of which have beautiful views of the beach, baths and surrounds.
The Merewether Ocean Baths are open all year round, subject to maintenance and cleaning, and they are patrolled daily throughout September to April. Always check the cleaning schedule to avoid disappointment.
This facility is easily accessible with both pools surrounded by concrete paths and ramps entering into both.
There are plenty of toilet and shower amenities (including hot showers), and a variety of free parking options in car-parks and on the surrounding roads but be mindful that it can be difficult to get a park during the popular seasons.
