The playground at Harold Myers Park in Birmingham Gardens has been renewed as part of City of Newcastle’s Playground Replacement Program for 2023 and it now features multiplay equipment designed to encourage interaction between children.
Harold Myers Park is located off Sandgate Road and you can access the playground from Wilkinson Avenue.
The renewed playground now includes slides, gangways, climbing nets, a climbing wall and more.
Kids can climb to the top of the larger slide via ladders and a gangway or a climbing net and then wave to you from above through a clear, perspex window.
The larger slide is great for older kids, but keep an eye on adventurous littlies as there is an open section from the top and middle platforms and the nets below might not catch them if they fall.
Little ones will likely prefer the double slide as it’s easier to access. If they tire of the slide they can slide down the fireman’s pole on the other side. The ground level play shop will also appeal to the younger set.
Toddlers are catered for again with a small sit-on bouncy.
All ages will enjoy the noughts and crosses, balancing beams and spinner.
This playground also features a ninja-style climbing cube. I’ve noticed these climbing cubes being incorporated into a lot of new playgrounds and I think they’re fantastic for kids’ strength, coordination and confidence.
They also encourage social interaction and collaboration, with a number of kids able to play on them at any one time. My kids, aged 6 and 8, love climbing cubes and happily play on them for extended periods of time.
The spinner was also a hit.
When it’s time for a swing, there’s a selection to suit all ages. Kids can choose from a regular swing or a group swing and there’s also a baby/toddler swing. The base of the playground is a mixture of softfall and woodchip.
There’s no shade over the playground itself, but there are shady trees in the park if you need a break from the sun. There’s also lots of grassed space for kids to run, play or kick a ball. Although Harold Myers Park is located on busy Sandgate Road, the playground is placed away from the road, towards the back of the park. The playground isn’t fenced to Wilkinson Avenue.
