Maitland Park All Abilities Playground is one of our favourite playgrounds and it’s easy to see why. It ticks all the boxes for a great kids playground. Fully fenced, lots of shade, accessible toilets plus plenty to keep little ones entertained. It’s one of many kids activities you can do in Maitland.
Before you even enter the fenced playground, dubbed ‘Magic Garden’, there’s plenty to love. From the large, shaded car park to the adjoining maintained green spaces perfect for kicking a ball around, a game of cricket or a picnic on the grass.
The playground’s all abilities features include a swing specifically for wheelchair users and a flying fox designed for children with a disability.
All kids will enjoy playing the ladybird xylophone or bongo drums in the sensory area.
In this area, there’s a sensory sign suggesting different things to spot and listen out for.
As the park is located close to railway lines, my little train-lover loves spotting and listening to the trains rumbling past while we count the carriages.
Although the park is popular and does get busy, we’ve never felt crowded here.
There’s just so much space and equipment for kids to share including three swings (two of which are baby/toddler swings), a great roundabout which seats three, a toddler playground and plenty of areas for hide and seek.
There is also a second flying fox and, as it’s low to the ground, my five-year-old doesn’t need assistance to use it, which I love.
Kids can practice their balancing skills on the large, soft crocodiles, giant snake and surrounding large rocks. My two little ones love to play a ‘Don’t fall in the water!’ game, attempting to balance without falling off or touching the softfall area below.
Toddlers and younger kids will enjoy the steps, bridge and slides in the play area while older kids will like the balancing equipment and climbing walls.
Be sure to pack the kids scooters, bikes (or both!) as there is a fantastic pretend play road complete with signs, crossings, speed bumps and a refuelling area.
This section of the park is a highlight for my kids, and on a recent visit, they had great fun riding their scooters round and round, only stopping to head back into the playground for another play.
If you have extra time available there is a great wide path, also perfect for riding or scootering, that winds around the park grounds. You can follow this path to the War Memorial and back through the neat gardens.
To truly make a day of your visit, bring swimming gear as the park is located directly opposite Maitland Aquatic Centre.
Pack a picnic or barbecue lunch and take advantage of the gas barbecues, undercover picnic tables or serene grassy areas shaded by the huge, old, leafy trees.
Maitland Park All Abilities Playground located at Maitland Park is a great place for families looking for a half-day or full-day out or somewhere a little different to meet up with friends or a parents/carers group.
