Best Maitland Walks To Do With Kids

Get out of the house and go for a walk with your kids. We’ve put together a collection of our favourite family walks in and around Maitland.

Maitland Park

Go for a stroll around Maitland Park. You can walk across the grass playing fields or follow the walking path around Maitland Park. This is a wide path, also perfect for riding or scootering, that winds around the park grounds. You can follow this path to the War Memorial and back through the gardens.

Distance: 1.8km loop
Suitability: Flat path suitable for prams and wheelchairs

Riverside Walk

Enjoy a riverside walk in Maitland CBD. With wide paths and views of the Hunter River and far off hills, it’s a scenic walk to enjoy. The Riverside Walk stretches from Hunter Street in Horseshoe Bend to Riverside Car Park.

Distance: 1km one-way
Suitability: Flat paved path suitable for prams and wheelchairs

Walka Water Works Walks – PARTIALLY CLOSED

Get some air at Walka Water Works and Wildlife Reserve. The Water Works was originally built in 1887 to supply water to Newcastle and the Lower Hunter Valley. The area has since been restored and preserved and is now registered with the New South Wales State Heritage Register. It’s a lovely setting for a family walk. There are walking trails located throughout the park. The 3km Lake Trail runs the perimeter of the lake. For shorter walks, choose the Bush Trail is known for its expansive views or the Kangaroo Trail is where, you guessed it, you are most likely to see a mob of kangaroos.

February 2023 Update: Maitland City Council has identified the presence of asbestos at some parts of the site, most likely associated with the site’s historical use as a power station. As a precaution, parts of Walka Water Works site HAS BEEN CLOSED to the public until further notice. Check the website to see what is open.

Morpeth Common

Go for a walk in Morpeth Common. It’s 750 meters away from the town’s centre is the beautiful Ray Lawler Reserve also known as Morpeth Common. It’s a sprawling green space that begins with a fenced-off park and picnic benches. The water next to the play area is also fenced off, which gives parents a bit more security with little ones around the water. The reserve stretches along a deep avenue of trees, which end up at a field of inquisitive cows and horses. It is a large inviting green space that is perfect for a walk for some fresh air.
