Hidden in the heart of Carrington is this very special and unique little treasure. What was once treated as a stormwater drain, Throsby Creek is now a thriving place filled with natural wildlife and people. Listen to the birds chirping and soak up the sun as you weave your way along the path and boardwalk.
Starting in Wickham, we crossed the Hannell Street bridge and followed the path around to the right until we reached a small opening where the boardwalk begins. From here simply follow the raised boardwalk as it zigg-zags its way through the many beautiful mangrove trees.
Unfortunately when we went, there were still signs of the devastating impact that pollution has had on this area. However, they are continuing to rehabilitate Throsby Creek and its surrounds to maintain the special place that it has become.
Along the walk, you will find a large platform overlooking the mangrove trees, as well as another that looks out across Throsby Creek and back towards Maryville. We stopped to watch some people kayaking down the creek and also saw some schools of fish swimming past.
If you want a short nature walk that’s suitable for all ages and abilities, then this is perfect. Our 3-year-old walked the track independently and we also had our littlest in the pram. Although some parts of the boardwalk are narrow, we had no problem weaving our way through with other passers-by.
We continued on until we reached the small bridge that crosses over to the Carrington Foreshore. Here you will find a small playground, a dog park and a natural walking path that you can follow right around Throsby creek itself.
We chose to head back the way we came and went on to explore the Wickham/Maryville side of the creek also. On this side, there is a shared walking and cycling track that follows Throsby Creek all the way into Newcastle CBD. The path is lined with pine-trees and townhouses, and the creek is full of activity.
We discovered a wonderful play structure located on the edge of the creek, called “A Drop In The Ocean”.
With different structures to climb on and explore, big shady trees and plenty of grass, it’s a great place to stop for a picnic and a play.
There’s also a number of local cafes located along or near the path, such as The Source Café, or The Wickham Boatshed where we stopped for lunch with some family.
Whether you want to get active, picnic in the park, sight-see or simply grab a cup of coffee, this is the perfect place to get outside and enjoy a family day out in Newcastle.
