Playgrounds with All-Abilities Equipment in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie & Hunter

Visit a playground that includes play equipment for people of all abilities. Every child deserves to have fun at a playground and inclusiveness should always be promoted. And it’s not just for kids. We recognise that parents and caregivers want the opportunity to play with their kids too and may be the ones that require all-abilities play equipment.

Here are the inclusive play spaces that we’ve found in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter that incorporate all-abilities equipment and amenities. If there’s one we’ve missed please let us know so that we can add it to the list.

Bernie Goodwin Memorial Park Playground (Morisset)

This colourful, fully-fenced, inclusive playground has disabled parking and disabled amenities nearby. There is a liberty swing, a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round (carousel), lookout tower and more. Read more about Bernie Goodwin Memorial Park Playground.

Bernie Thompson Park Playground (Shoal Bay)

The fully-fenced adventure playground at Bernie Thompson Park, Shoal Bay includes an accessible basket swing. There’s also established trees for shade and nearby public amenities. You can find this playground at 101-122 Government Road, Shoal Bay.

Boomerang Park (Raymond Terrace)

Boomerang Park at Raymond Terrace includes a merry-go-round (carousel) that is flush to the ground and designed to accommodate up to three wheelchairs. There are wide concrete paths weaving through the park, disabled car parking and a disabled toilet.

Foreshore Park (Newcastle)

Foreshore Park in Newcastle includes a Liberty Swing – a safe and easy to use swing that allows people in wheelchairs or those not confined to a wheelchair, but who still need the support of a seatbelt, to experience the joy of swinging in a park. Huntlee District Park One (North Rothbury)

The all-abilities equipment at his large playground includes a flush-to-the-ground merry-go-round and a large, accessible bouncy, both shaded by large shade sails. There are large, flat concrete paths, suitable for wheelchairs, winding through and around and accessible amenities.

Lake Macquarie Variety Playground (Speers Point)

Lake Macquarie Variety Playground is fully fenced. The newest play equipment includes a lookout tower with wide paths that are wheelchair accessible.

There is also a wheelchair accessible playboat and a Liberty Swing.

For people with visual impairment, there is a tactile orientation totem pole and for those with sensory needs and special needs, there is a quiet zone retreat specifically designed to allow children to enjoy playing in a more passive environment. Maitland Park (Maitland)

Maitland Park All Abilities Playground has a Liberty Swing and a flying fox with an accessible seat. An MLA key to use the Liberty Swing can be borrowed from Maitland Pool Kiosk, a short distance away. The sensory garden features a sensory totem pole and various musical instruments at low height. A large sign in this area suggests different things to spot and listen out for. The concrete paths that wind through Maitland Park are wide and, with big, old, shady trees, the park is beautiful to walk or wheel around. Maybury Peace Park (Weston)

Maybury Peace Park includes a Liberty Swing – a safe and easy to use swing that allows people in wheelchairs or those not confined to a wheelchair, but who still need the support of a seatbelt, to experience the joy of swinging in a park. The swing can be accessed by using a disability amenities MLA key. There is also a wheelchair-accessible lookout tower and the nearby duck pond is a peaceful spot to watch ducks swim and play.

Rose Point Park (Singleton)

At Rose Point Park you’ll find a merry-go-round (carousel) that is flush to the ground and designed to accommodate up to three wheelchairs, a lookout tower with wheelchair-accessible ramps, three in-ground trampolines and a flying fox with an accessible chair. Rose Point Park also has a Liberty Swing that can be accessed by using a disability amenities MLA key. There are disabled amenities located in the fenced part of the playground. Richley Reserve, Blackbutt Reserve (New Lambton)

A lot of the play equipment at Richley Reserve is wheelchair-accessible, including the merry-go-round (carousel), ‘cubby houses’, concrete tunnel and ramp to the play tower. There is also plenty of shaded seating and amenities close by. Read more about Richley Reserve.

Stockland Green Hills

You’ll find two inclusive play areas at Stockland Green Hills. Designed in collaboration with the Touched by Olivia Foundation, the play areas allow children, including those with physical disabilities, vision, hearing and mobility impairments, or spectrum disorders to all play together. The play area located on Level 1, opposite Harry Hartog, includes sensory and tactile play spaces for discovery and learning. The Enchanted Forest play area has warped mirrors and telescopes and a ‘flexible forest’ for kids to explore.

Thomas H Halton Park, Croudace Bay

Thomas H Halton is classified as an all-abilities park. This means it’s designed to accommodate the physical and intellectual needs of children and parents. There are no steps in this playground to impede wheelchairs. Wide pathing flows throughout the playground providing access to the different zones of the park. The pirate ship has a wide ramp so that kids can access the top deck. The water play area is concrete and level and the roundabout is level to the ground. The toilet block also includes an accessible toilet.

Wallsend Brickworks Park (Wallsend)

Brickworks Park includes a merry-go-round (carousel) that is flush to the ground and designed to accommodate up to three wheelchairs. There are wide, sealed paths leading into and around the park and a large bird-viewing platform with secure fencing.

Brickworks Park is also a lovely spot for a picnic or barbecue, with it’s large, covered picnic area and barbecues. There are clean amenities located at the entrance to the park. Read more about Wallsend Brickworks Park.

Warner Park (Warners Bay)

Warner Park at Warners Bay has disabled amenities and access. The playground is fenced with a wide, flat, concrete path weaving through it. There is a wheelchair merry-go-round, designed for users on a wheelchair as well as able-bodied users. There are also chalkboards at wheelchair height (bring your own chalk).
